Smart ways to save on fuel

It takes approx. 3 minutes to read this article

Fuel costs in Poland, but also around the world, are steadily rising. Drivers are certainly looking for ways to save money. The obvious one is to switch to a bicycle or electric scooter, but what if you regularly travel outside the city? How do you save on fuel? Learn some clever ways.

Ways to save on fuel

Surely you want to keep your car’s maintenance costs down? If so, the first thing you need to do is to make sure your vehicle burns less, especially at a time when fuel is horrendously expensive. How can you do that? Here are some examples.

Technical condition of the car – filters, tires, etc.

As it turns out, the technical condition of your vehicle can significantly affect fuel consumption. First of all, faulty, old fuel filters can inflate the results appearing on the dashboard. In addition, the engine itself, if not regularly serviced and well adjusted, will also increase fuel consumption. Another point is the tires, these should have the correct manufacturer-recommended pressure. Don’t expect lower fuel consumption if one or two tires have much less pressure than they should.

Reduce air resistance and vehicle weight

It’s important to reduce your car’s drag, which works especially when driving faster. How can you do this? First of all, drive with the windows closed, but also the sunroof. Protruding elements, irregularly draining air around the car will make the vehicle burn more. Resistance is not everything, also focus on reducing weight. Of course, this is not always possible, for example, when you go on vacation with your family. Nonetheless, on a daily basis, you can lighten the vehicle’s load by taking out everything you don’t normally need.

Match gear to speed, drive smoothly

If you drive too high or too low a gear in relation to speed, you’ll find that fuel is even devoured by the vehicle. How to deal with this? Always control the gear and keep the tachometer at around 2/2.5 thousand. You can then count on significant decreases in fuel burn, and thus also save money. Of course, it goes without saying that it is best to travel by car calmly, without unnecessary sudden acceleration and braking. Smooth driving and constant speed are effective ways to save money.

Swap the car for a bike, walk

It’s not always possible, but if you don’t want to stand in traffic jams every day, opt for a bike, a walk or an electric scooter. This will certainly be a sensible option if you have several kilometers to work, and driving a car during rush hour takes much longer than it would if you traveled by bicycle. Of course, this will not only affect fuel economy, but also ecology. You can’t forget that it’s a great workout, especially if you lead a sedentary lifestyle.

CarSharing – a way to reduce fuel costs

We also want to point out that a very interesting way to save fuel, especially when traveling long distances, is CarSharing. You can find a person who, at a convenient time for you, also sets off to a specific destination that passes through your route. This person will cover part of the cost for fuel, and as a result, you will save money. You have several options here, including sites like BlaBlaCar and Carpooling.
